Which compact espresso machine to buy

We track 12 compact espresso machines. De'Longhi Stilosa has the highest score, 9.5/10. 7 of 12 have PID temperature control; 1 has a dual boiler. Independent warm-up measurements exist for 1 model. Prices run $149.95 to $4,500, checked Oct 16, 2026. 6 models have no published price.

Best for: a small kitchen where every inch of counter counts. The narrowest machine here with a store button is the De'Longhi Dedica at 5.9 in wide ($249.95). For milk drinks, the Breville Bambino Plus is 7.4 in wide and froths automatically ($499.95). If you want a boiler machine that still fits, the ECM Puristika is 7.7 in, the Profitec GO is 8.27 in, and the Rancilio Silvia is 9.3 in wide.

Skip if: you make several milk drinks in a row and want a big water tank; small machines give up both, and dual boilers are the step up. Many machines sold as "mini" are capsule machines; this list covers machines that use ground coffee in a portafilter.

Cards are for machines with a store button, a list price and stock at the store we link to. The Breville Bambino is sold out at the store we link to (checked October 16, 2026), so we leave it out of the picks for now. The Puristika, GO, Silvia, and Dream PID have only a dealer price on file, so they stay in the table.

All 12 compact espresso machines compared by width

Width decides whether a machine fits next to the grinder and the kettle, so the table runs from narrowest to widest. Depth and height are listed where the brand labels them; tank size is the brand's figure. We couldn't confirm dimensions for the Gaggia Classic Evo Pro and Lelit Anna, so they sit at the bottom.

How small is "compact"? Widths by type, and what you give up

By the brands' figures, the on-demand machines here (ThermoJet, thermoblock or thermocoil) run 5.9–9.6 in wide, the single boilers 7.7–9.3 in, and the dual boiler, the Linea Micra, 11.5 in. What the narrow ones give up shows in two places.

Water tank. Among the machines with a published tank size, the narrowest three hold 34.83 fl oz (1 L) on the Dedica, 47 fl oz (1.4 L) on the Bambino, and 64 fl oz (1.9 L) on the Bambino Plus. The biggest tank on the list is on the GO, at 95 fl oz (2.8 L). A smaller tank means more frequent refills.

Steam. On an on-demand machine or a single boiler, brewing and steaming share one heater, so you wait between the shot and the milk. The ECM Puristika has no steam wand at all, by its brand's spec: espresso only. The La Marzocco Linea Micra is the exception here: a dual boiler, so it can steam while it brews, at 11.5 in wide and $4,500.

Compact prosumer machines

A prosumer-class machine doesn't have to be wide. The ECM Puristika is 7.7 in wide with a single boiler and PID, and a 68 fl oz (2 L) tank; we found it at $1,659 at Whole Latte Love (checked October 16, 2026). The Profitec GO is 8.27 in wide with a single boiler and PID, and a 95 fl oz (2.8 L) tank; we found it at $1,199 at Clive Coffee (checked October 16, 2026). The Rancilio Silvia is 9.3 in wide with a single boiler and a thermostat instead of PID, and a 68 fl oz (2 L) tank. The Ascaso Dream PID is 9.6 in wide with a thermoblock heater and PID, and a 44 fl oz (1.3 L) tank; we found it at $1,550 at Seattle Coffee Gear (checked October 16, 2026). The La Marzocco Linea Micra is 11.5 in wide with two boilers and PID, and a 68 fl oz (2 L) tank, at $4,500.

The Lelit Anna is another single boiler with PID, but we couldn't confirm its dimensions; our Lelit Anna review has the rest. For more machines in this class, see our prosumer picks.

Small kitchen checklist

Height under the cabinets. Measure the gap between the counter and the upper cabinets, then leave room above the machine to lift a lid or a tank. Heights here run from 11.22 in (Stilosa) to 15 in (GO).

Depth with the portafilter in. Brands usually give depth without the handle. Profitec gives both for the GO: 14.25 in without the portafilter and 16.1 in with it.

How the tank comes out. A tank that lifts out from the top needs clearance above; one that slides out from the side or front doesn't. By the brands' descriptions, the Dream PID has a side-removable tank, and the GO has a tank with a removable lid.

Width for the grinder. A machine without a grinder needs one beside it, so add the grinder's width; our grinder picks list widths too.

What owners say about small machines

Owners like the size: 73 of 91 Amazon reviews that mention compact size are positive for the Breville Bambino Plus. The weak spot is how long they last: negative mentions run 82 of 130 on durability for the Gaggia Classic Evo Pro, 83 of 97 on durability for the Breville Bambino Plus, and 204 of 270 on durability for the De'Longhi Stilosa. A small machine is cheap to start with, so check the warranty and the return window before you buy.

How we picked

We ask 5 questions about each compact machine: is there authorized service in the US and a parts catalog; does the brand publish the boiler, pump, group, temperature control and warm-up time; how the price compares with the median for similar models; how long the warranty runs and whether returns are open for 30 days or more; what owners report, from reviews we read. Each answer is worth 1.5, 1.75 or 2 points, and the score out of 10 adds them up, so no compact machine scores below 7.5. Prices were checked on Oct 16, 2026. Read the full method.
