Of 25 espresso machines in our database with a published portafilter size, 13 use 58 mm, eight use 54 mm, one uses 57 mm, one uses 53 mm, one uses 52 mm, and one uses 51 mm. Every 54 mm machine is a Breville. Super-automatics such as the De'Longhi Eletta Explore, Jura Z10, and Jura E6 have a built-in brew unit instead of a portafilter, so they aren't listed.

Gaggia Classic Pro portafilter size

The Gaggia Classic Pro portafilter size is 58 mm. The 2023 Classic Evo Pro sold in the US ships with a polished stainless 58 mm portafilter, per Stark Insider's launch coverage (June 22, 2023), and the E24 sits on the same RI9380 platform. Gaggia's own manual for the Classic (2019, document 4219-465-02181) covers the RI9380.

That puts the Classic in the most common size in our table, shared by eight brands. Our Gaggia Classic Pro review covers the generations in detail.

Breville portafilter size: 54 mm or 58 mm?

It depends on the model. Breville's product pages describe a “High quality 54mm portafilter” on its home machines and a “Commercial grade 58mm portafilter” on the Oracle line. In our database:

So a 58 mm basket or tamper won't fit a Barista Express, and a 54 mm one won't fit a Dual Boiler. Our Breville accessories guide covers baskets and tools by model.

E61 and other 58 mm groups

Outside Breville, nearly every machine in our table uses a 58 mm group. Lelit's L58E, its name for an E61-type group, takes 58 mm on the Bianca and Mara X, and Lelit says it is “compatible with LELIT58 barista tools.” Meraki, Profitec, Rancilio, La Marzocco, and Ascaso machines in the table are 58 mm too.

The exceptions we found are the Lelit Anna (57 mm), the Lucca A53 Mini (53 mm), the Wacaco Picopresso (52 mm), and the Casabrews 5418 Pro (51 mm). Our E61 machine picks and prosumer picks compare the 58 mm machines on other points.

Does portafilter size matter?

Size alone doesn't make better espresso; nothing in the brand documents we read claims that. It matters for parts and tools. A basket, tamper, or distribution tool has to match your portafilter, and 13 of the 25 machines in our table, across eight brands, share 58 mm.

In our table, 54 mm is a Breville-only size. Breville's US parts page lists portafilters and tampers; before you buy one, check that the listing names your model.

How to find your portafilter size

The quickest answer is your manual or the product page for your model, which is where every number in the table comes from. If your machine isn't listed, look in the manual's specifications or parts list.

Questions people ask

How do I know the size of a portafilter?

Check your machine's manual or product page; brands state the portafilter size in millimeters. Our table lists 25 machines with the source for each number. Among them, every Breville home machine uses 54 mm, the Breville Dual Boiler and Oracle use 58 mm, and machines from Meraki, Profitec, Rancilio, and La Marzocco all use 58 mm.

Is the E61 58mm?

The E61-type groups in our database take 58 mm portafilters. Lelit's L58E, its version of the E61 group on the Bianca and Mara X, is 58 mm, and Lelit says it works with its LELIT58 tools. Check your own machine's manual, since brands describe their groups in their own terms.

Is Breville 54mm or 58mm?

Both, by model. In our database, eight Breville home machines, from the Bambino to the Barista Touch Impress, use 54 mm. The Dual Boiler, Oracle Touch, and Oracle use 58 mm, which Breville calls a “commercial grade” portafilter. The size is on each model's product page.
