Which espresso grinder to buy
We track 24 espresso grinders. Breville Smart Grinder Pro has the highest score, 9.5/10, tied with 1 other model. Prices run $159.95 to $599.95, checked Oct 17, 2026. 14 models have no published price.
Best for: anyone pairing a grinder with an espresso machine that doesn't have one. Under $250 with a store button, the options are Breville and Baratza, such as the Breville Smart Grinder Pro ($199.95, 60 grind settings) and the Baratza Encore ESP ($199.95, 40 mm conical burrs). Step up to the Baratza Sette 270 ($399.95) for timed dosing in 0.1-second steps, or to a flat-burr grinder such as the Baratza Vario+ ($529.95) or Lelit William ($599.95).
Skip if: you're still choosing a machine. Machines with a built-in grinder save the second purchase, and our main espresso machine list shows which ones need a grinder at all. Under a tighter budget, budget grinders have their own list.
Cards are for grinders with a store button and a published price; the Lelit Fred, Eureka Mignon Libra, Eureka Mignon Specialità, Fiorenzato F64 Evo, Eureka Mignon Notte, Eureka Mignon Silenzio, and Rancilio Stile OD have a button but no price we could confirm yet. The Breville Dose Control Pro is sold out at the store we link to (checked October 16, 2026), so we leave it out of the picks for now.
Which grinder is best for espresso: flat vs conical, stepped vs stepless
Both burr types make espresso; what differs is size, adjustment and how the dose is measured. In our data, every conical burr set is smaller than every flat one: 38–48 mm conical against 50–64 mm flat, by the brands' figures.

Adjustment is the second choice. 11 grinders here are stepless, so you can set the grind anywhere in the range; the Breville Dose Control Pro, Breville Smart Grinder Pro, Baratza Encore ESP, Baratza Sette 270, and Baratza Vario+ use steps, with the Baratza Sette 270 and Baratza Vario+ splitting them into macro and micro adjustments and Breville listing 60 settings. Stepless suits a single espresso machine you dial in once; steps make it easier to switch back to a coarser grind.
Dosing is the third. The Eureka Mignon Libra grinds by weight, within ±0.2 g by Eureka's figure; the Baratza Sette 270 and Baratza Vario+ use timers in 0.1-second steps; the DF64 Gen 2, DF54, Turin SK40, and Varia VS3 are built for single dosing, where you weigh the beans and grind them all.
Single dose espresso grinders
A single-dose grinder has no bean hopper to speak of: you weigh one dose of beans, grind all of it and keep the rest of the bag sealed. In our data, four grinders are listed for it: the DF DF64 Gen 2, DF DF54, Turin SK40, and Varia VS3; the DF64 pairs it with 64 mm flat burrs and stepless adjustment, and its US seller includes one year of warranty.
The Fellow Opus and Niche Zero are in our database too, without a single-dose spec yet. Fellow now sells the second-generation Opus 2 with a 2-year warranty; we don't have a confirmed US price for the Niche. We can't link to a store for either right now.
Compact espresso grinders
Width decides whether a grinder fits beside the machine. The narrowest on file is the Eureka Mignon Specialità at 4.75 in wide; Baratza Encore ESP, Baratza Sette 270, and Baratza Vario+ are also 5.5 in or less. Breville's grinders are wider: the Breville Smart Grinder Pro lists 8.5 in and the Breville Dose Control Pro 8 in.
| Grinder | Width | Weight | Hopper |
|---|---|---|---|

| Lelit William | 9.1 in | 14.7 lb | 350 g |
High-end espresso grinders
Above $400, every grinder here with a published price uses flat burrs. The Lelit William has 64 mm flat burrs and a timed-dosing display; the Timemore Sculptor 064 has 64 mm flat burrs, adjustable speed from 800 to 1,600 RPM and interchangeable burr sets; the Fiorenzato F64 Evo is a stepless 64 mm flat-burr grinder with a 1,500 g hopper that weighs 29 lb, the heaviest on file.
Several brands that cafés and enthusiasts name, Mahlkönig and Mazzer among them, aren't in our database with specs yet, so they aren't compared here.
Questions people ask
What type of grinder is best for espresso?
A burr grinder that adjusts in fine steps or steplessly; blade grinders can't hold the fine, even grind espresso needs. Conical and flat burrs both work: in our data, conical sets run 38–48 mm and flat sets 50–64 mm. Pick on adjustment and dosing first; the table above compares them.
Is an espresso grinder different from a regular coffee grinder?
It needs a finer range and smaller steps. Some grinders cover both: Breville lists 60 settings on the Breville Smart Grinder Pro, from espresso to French press. On a grinder without that range, all the steps go to espresso.
How much should I spend on an espresso grinder?
The grinders with a store button and a published price here start at $199.95 (Breville Smart Grinder Pro) and go to $599.95 (Lelit William). For a tighter budget, see budget grinders; with a machine that has no grinder, budget for both at once.
How we picked
We ask 5 questions about each grinder: is there authorized service in the US and a parts catalog; does the brand publish burr type, burr size and dosing; how the price compares with the median for similar models; how long the warranty runs and whether returns are open for 30 days or more; what owners report, from reviews we read. Each answer is worth 1.5, 1.75 or 2 points, and the score out of 10 adds them up, so no grinder scores below 7.5. Owner reviews not summarized yet, so every model gets 1.75 of 2 points there for now. Prices were checked on Oct 17, 2026. Read the full method.
