La Marzocco GS3 Review

One espresso machine, price not available. The La Marzocco GS3 is a dual boiler home machine with an exposed saturated group, sold as the volumetric AV or the paddle MP. Prima Coffee listed the AV at $8,400 and the MP at $8,820 (checked October 16, 2026). Owners on r/espresso describe machines still running after a decade or more, and the MP sends about 240 ml of water to the drip tray per shot. It suits a plumbed-in home bar where price matters less than longevity.

Who it suits

Best for

anyone who wants a 3.5 L steam boiler and a commercial-style group at home, and will plumb it in or doesn't mind refilling a 3.5 L tank.

Specs and claimed vs measured

La Marzocco publishes boiler sizes, dimensions, and the control layout, but no warm-up time or brew temperature. Reviewer coverage is thin, and most GS3 videos come from dealers. The independent owner with numbers is The Real Sprometheus, who owned an MP for about a year and a half.

What La Marzocco states vs what reviewers observed on the GS3 (videos checked October 15, 2026)
La Marzocco saysReviewers observed
Warm-upNot statedabout 30–40 minutes from cold, an owner's estimate (The Real Sprometheus)
Brew temperaturedual PID, saturated groupno reviewer measured it
Pressure profiling (MP)conical paddle6 bar with a 3 bar preinfusion as one chosen profile (The Real Sprometheus)
Water per shot (MP)Not statedabout 240 ml (8 fl oz) to the drip tray per shot (The Real Sprometheus)
Water tank3.5 Lan owner gives 2.5 L (The Real Sprometheus)

Two observations stand out. The MP wastes water. With the paddle part-open, bypass water goes to the drip tray, and Sprometheus measured about 240 ml per shot, about a cup, after describing 6 oz per 2 oz shot in his first review. And the warm-up is long: he puts it at 30–40 minutes from cold, without an instrument.

Real price: MSRP, tax and setup

La Marzocco Home sells the GS3 through a configurator whose price we couldn't read. Our figures come from Prima Coffee: $8,400 for the AV and $8,820 for the MP, a $420 difference (checked October 16, 2026). Add sales tax, which varies by state.

Budget for the rest of the setup too: a grinder of matching quality, and water treatment if you plumb it in. Our espresso grinder picks cover the grinder side.

Where to buy: La Marzocco Home vs Prima Coffee

Where you buy changes the warranty. La Marzocco Home says “The La Marzocco GS3, Leva-x and Strada-x machines carry a 13-month parts and labor warranty when purchased directly from La Marzocco Home” (warranty page). Prima's listing gives “One year labor warranty/13 months parts warranty.” La Marzocco also tells reseller customers to contact the reseller first, so the store you choose becomes your first stop for support.

The GS3 has no Amazon listing. Buy from La Marzocco Home or an authorized reseller such as Prima.

Warranty and returns

GS3
1-yr

Bought direct, the GS3 carries 13 months of parts and labor; through Prima, one year of labor and 13 months of parts. That's shorter than the 24 months La Marzocco gives the cheaper Linea Mini when bought direct: “The La Marzocco Linea Mini espresso machine carries a 24-month parts and labor warranty.”

The Real Sprometheus used the warranty once, for a leaking group seal within about seven months, and reported no further issues after it. Return terms depend on the seller; we haven't logged La Marzocco Home's.

Parts and service in the US

La Marzocco Home gives direct buyers one-on-one phone support on weekdays and keeps “a list of preferred service providers” for in-person help (FAQ); the support line is (206) 258-2532. It doesn't publish how many providers there are or a public locator. Spare parts are sold on La Marzocco Home's site.

One owner-reported fix worth knowing: Pesado 58.5 traced sluggish discharge into the drip tray to a mesh insert in the discharge valve and recommends checking it.

Boiler and temperature control

The GS3 has a 1.5 L coffee boiler and a 3.5 L steam boiler, each under PID control, plus a preheating system ahead of the coffee boiler. The group is an exposed saturated group, La Marzocco's commercial design. No reviewer we found measured the brew temperature.

GS3 AV vs MP: volumetric or paddle

The two versions share the chassis. The AV is auto-volumetric, with programmable shot volumes and preinfusion. The MP replaces the buttons with a conical paddle that sets pump pressure by hand. That lets you run profiles such as Sprometheus's 3 bar preinfusion into a 6 bar shot.

The MP costs $420 more at Prima and wastes water whenever the paddle is part-open. If you want repeatable shots at the press of a button, the AV fits; if you want to shape each shot, the MP does. The GS3 has been made since 2008, the MP since 2014.

Pump, plumb-in and water

La Marzocco calls the pump an “internal pump” and doesn't state its type on the GS3 page. The 3.5 L tank “makes plumbing optional,” per La Marzocco; the GS3 page links a separate plumb-in manual. Running off the tank also makes it possible for a mobile setup; see our coffee cart picks.

Steam wand and milk

The 3.5 L steam boiler is the largest in La Marzocco's home range in our database, larger than the Linea Mini's 3 L. No reviewer timed it, but Sprometheus called it “the best I've used on a non-commercial, non-220v machine” (video).

GS3 vs Linea Mini vs Linea Micra

Within La Marzocco's home range, the GS3 is the most expensive machine in our database. The Linea Mini is $1,800 less than the AV with a 3 L steam boiler and no flow/pressure profiling; the Linea Micra is $3,900 less and much smaller.

Outside La Marzocco, the Lelit Bianca offers dual boilers and a flow paddle for $5,400.05 less than the GS3 AV; our Bianca review covers it. For how La Marzocco compares with other makers, see our espresso machine brand guide, and our dual boiler picks line up the rest.

Size and power

The GS3 runs on 110V single phase and weighs 76.1 lb. La Marzocco lists it at 16 W × 14 H × 21 D in. Owners disagree on the tank: La Marzocco gives 3.5 L, while Sprometheus refers to 2.5 L.

Recalls and safety notices

We found no CPSC recall for any La Marzocco machine as of October 15, 2026. We haven't matched the GS3 to a UL or ETL listing record. For commercial use, see our commercial espresso machine picks.

What owners say

The GS3 has no Amazon listing, so there's no marketplace rating. We read 257 r/espresso posts and comments from January 16, 2025 to October 12, 2026; three (1.2%) described a fault. One site isn't enough for a complaint index, so read that as a lower bound.

What owners complain about

The faults we found were one each: a leaking group on an older machine, a pump issue on a 2022 MP, and an electronics fault. The leak report read “Now that I'm back I have a lot of water leaking from the group-head and between shots the pressure falls to 3 bar within about 15 seconds.” (r/espresso, July 6, 2025).

On the pump, an owner wrote “The pump doesn’t always stop immediately when I move the paddle back, causing the pump to keep running without water supply.” (r/espresso, January 16, 2025).

The software side draws complaints too: The Real Sprometheus describes La Marzocco's Home app crashing, failing to connect, and losing settings over a year and a half.

What owners praise

Longevity. One owner wrote “I got my La Marzocco GS3 back in 2014 and it's still working just like it was when new, the display is a bit damaged, probably from the heat, so some numbers display weirdly but thats about it.” (r/espresso, May 9, 2026).

Another wrote “It’s still the king. I’d pull on an MP no hesitation. I think there will be a lot of people fall back on these machines as the sweet spot. Super reliable too.” (r/espresso, May 25, 2026).

Sprometheus sold his MP in 2024 for reasons unrelated to reliability, including not using it enough. A search of r/espresso returned 405 posts about the GS3 in the past year, zero describing a breakdown.

Questions people ask

How much does a La Marzocco GS3 cost?

Prima Coffee listed the GS3 AV at $8,400 and the GS3 MP at $8,820 on October 16, 2026; La Marzocco Home sells it through a configurator. Add sales tax, a grinder, and water treatment if you plumb it in. The Linea Mini is $6,600 and the Linea Micra $4,500 for comparison.
